WE ARE CURATING A NET SHOWCASE FOR oranbeg - HOPE TO SEE YOUR WORK IN THE SUBMISSIONS!
Prompt: Your gastrointestinal tract is 9 meters long. You eat: for the next 24 to 72 hours each mouthful will be ground down, broken apart, denatured, processed and, finally, absorbed - or excreted. Nearly a ton a year.
87% of us (in America) have some kind of life online. Nearly 2000 hours a year. We communicate using text, video, and images: with each other, with organizations, and with technology itself. Every day we eat, for sustenance, for pleasure, or for social interaction. We consume this digital stuff for the same reasons, every day, and at an accelerating pace.
Does this make you feel invigorated? Or bloated?

The opening sequence of Under The Skin, the latest film by Jonathan Glazer, left me optimistic. After the lights fell, before the title showed, the screen was nothing but an expansive black void. Thin otherworldly sounds slowly rose, and near the center of the frame a minuscule white dot began to grow. For the next few minutes we saw almost entirely abstracted imagery, gradually accompanied by Scarlett Johansson’s voice (sounding strikingly artificial considering it is known for its voluptuousness). Popcorn ceased to rustle, and for a moment the room was silent. The sequence commanded the audience in ways that can only be effectively achieved in a cinema, and it was captivating in its ambiguity.
Made a GIF for Malcolm’s great review of Under the Skin.
AMO Studios is proud to present SIKE!, the first solo show by photographer Elizabeth Renstrom. The exhibition consists of a new body of work, paired with an installation of objects featured in the photographs. There will be a pop up shop in conjunction with the exhibition, selling zines and cute custom made barrettes. The shrines and ceremonies dedicated to disposable popular culture found within the artist’s 2012 series Waxy Chunks are taken one step further in SIKE! Instead of putting the symbols and icons in children’s media from the 1990’s on a pedestal, they are debased and imploded through a new series of humorous, absurd sculptures. SIKE! explores the implications of “putting away childish things” in a hyperreal concentrated visual manner, indicative of the artist’s style. Elizabeth Renstrom is an internationally published photographer who has been featured in several group exhibitions both nationally and internationally, including VICE’s 2012 Photo Show, New York, NY, A Day Away, Slow Culture Gallery, Los Angeles, CA, and When We Were Young, Objectifs Gallery, Singapore, Singapore. She has also been published in several magazines including; TIME, Vice, Bloomberg Businessweek, Marie Claire and PIG Quarterly.
Opening reception: 13 June 2014, 0600-0900PM
The show runs until June 14th, 2014.
